Chapter 33

Gabriel

I lay with my hands behind my head as I listened to the door to the spare bedroom slam shut.

At least she hadn’t left altogether. Running was what Samantha did best.

I lay there for a few moments, listening to the sound of my heartbeat thumping in my ears. How had it all gone so wrong in a matter of minutes?

Samantha Donovan was the most frustrating woman I had ever met in my life. I should have just given her what she wanted. My need to be in control was greater than ever tonight and I wasn’t sure why. Maybe, I needed to prove that she was mine? Maybe, I needed to remind her that she was?

I sighed and wondered how long I’d have to leave her stewing in her own juice – quite literally – before I went after her. Because I would. I always did.

She had me by the balls. She never backed down. She didn’t have to because she knew I always would. That was the pattern we had become locked into and I wondered how, or if, we would ever break it. It was fucking exhausting. How could she even dare to suggest that I hadn’t missed her?

I looked up as the door opened, creaking softly in the quiet house. I watched as Samantha crept back inside the room. My heart contracted in my chest.

Here it was. Now she was about to tell me she was leaving – again, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do this time to make her stay.

She walked over to the bed and lifted the cover, taking me completely by surprise as she slipped underneath the duvet beside me. She pressed her naked body against mine and I let out the breath I’d been holding in.

‘I’m sorry,’ she whispered. ‘I swear these pregnancy hormones make me crazy.’

‘You’ve always been crazy,’ I said with a grin and she nudged me in the ribs. I rolled on top of her. ‘Me too.’

‘You too? Crazy or sorry?’

‘Both.’

‘I love you, Gabe. I’ve been so miserable without you. I know it was my choice, but that didn’t make it hurt any less. Every single time I saw you or spoke to you a part of me wanted you to pull me into your arms and carry me back home. If I was a bitch to you it was because I had to push you away, because you have so much power over me. It terrifies me how much I need you.’

I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. ‘I will always be anything you need, Sam. You don’t ever have to be scared of your feelings for me. I will never do anything to hurt you again. I promise.’

She placed her hands on my face and nodded as she blinked back tears. ‘I know,’ she whispered before she pulled my face to hers.
